Under creation

So many things are in the works at the moment, so many dreams half created cluttering up our lives. But for me, at least, the big one that currently looms so large it dwarfs the others is the shop. We officially had a discussion last night whether it would be called the shop or the shed or something else entirely. The shop it is. (the shed is a smaller structure out back that was already here and leans out probably 2 inches further away from the house than it did when I moved in) .

The shop, my shop, my first shop, my very first shop! I have had a few minor panicky moments; build it means I am super invested in staying here and trying to do this, it is a lot of work, it is an expense, it is effort, and long days. The day before I really started cleaning up and getting ready to build, I felt overwhelmingly daunted with all the questions I did not have an answer too and all of the time that it would take. But now, after a weekend of work and a sickly Patrick’s help, there is something where there was nothing. That is not to say that the something is anywhere near completion.

During one of my stressy moments before the weekend, a frustrated Pat snapped at me, that it would take way less time than I was worrying about,

“Hell we can bang it up in 4 hours”

This we both knew to be entirely false but that didn’t really matter but nonetheless his real goal was in shutting me up.  Although that comment came back a few times this weekend to haunt him (only with laughter)

The shop is one of those building projects that can’t be pre planned. I mean the general concept can and a basic plan formulated but to really build it requires constant adaptations, renegotiations and spur of the moment creations. When dealing with wacky building in wonky spots that are hardly long term (we rent). There is nothing for it but to start.

As Patrick says …. “ The only way to build such a structure is to build it.” (He has a lot of similar advice for example in the fall I was told more than once, “The only way to pick a lot of blackberries is to pick blackberries!”)

And so we did. And so it starts and I will pick up and continue tomorrow. And the
next day and the next and hopefully one day soon I will have my first place, my first real space to create all that I can.

The space beside the house before we started building. Pat had just moved his boat out to the marina. It had been on a trailer here  (that is what the plastic wall is from)

The chaos of the build, all of my stuff out under a tarp in the back yard

The shop space from the back yard, before the build this is what I was using for a shop. I have just cleared out the space into the back yard to tear down the old aluminium structure and get rid of it. I will also destroy this plastic cover I built in the summer to keep the table saw dry.
It is always a process of creation and then destruction and then creation around here.

All cleaned out and starting to build

And now we are getting somewhere (in addition the roof has to be hinging since there is an old van in the back yard that one day will have to drive through the shop - so the roof has to be able to accommodate this)

Saturday night, according to Patrick everything is improved with a coleman lantern
